toulouse: the eternal quest for the stingray.

lost the pubs wandering michel sarran royale with cheese carcassonne

my stone-age electric shaver was apparently not up to the challenge of having to sense and adapt to non-us voltages. it fried and died a horrible death.
my talk was scheduled in the first slot (after the keynote) in the first workshop on the first day of the conference. thinking it started at 8am, i arrived at 7am to discover that it didn't really start until 9:15am and that my talk wouldn't happen until 11am! ack.
"it's a unix system! i know this!!" -- lex.
my futile attempts to obtain a login on console. (didn't have a floppy on hand unfortunately :) the observant viewer will note that i am completely out of touch with the hpca series. it was hpca6 in toulouse (not hpca15!) which, btw, turned out to be the login! the password was easily guessable as well.
philippe reynes, phd student at the institut de recherche en informatique de toulouse or more simply: irit.
thierry haquin, pascal sainrat, and two of the women in rotation at the hpca welcome desk.
philippe called me a japanese tourist. these women obviously like being photographed by japanese tourists.
some sports structure that got in our way on our way to lunch. we didn't travel far though.
soon enough, we were at chez margot where we leveraged off of jeremy martin's rudimentary (but impressive in my opinion) french skills to snag a table and obtain pretty good service.
these guys evidently had the same idea.
jeremy martin (oxford supercomputing center) and michael haungs (uc davis cs dept). jeremy and i bumped into michael and his pal phil sallee on our way to lunch and so we invited them to join us.
michael looking on while phil attempts to discover whether the meat he's eating is indeed duck's liver.
i drank a lot of wine while i was in france. wonder if uc berkeley will cover me for it. :)
not a stingray, but nonetheless very tasty.
phil paying for his duck's liver.
on our way back to the conference. we had a fairly long lunch and i missed some up*/down* routing talk in the process. think i was stressing over it? hah. :)
note: size of logos not proportional to stock performance.
there's a park between the conference center and the novotel, so i decided to take some pictures. january is clearly not the best time to visit this place.
grey skies and no leaves. i suppose pictures of scenes like this are good for contrast to some of my other pictures on my web page.
trying hard to make something out of nothing. :)
another attempt at the same. matt massie will note that the captions are getting shorter, but i assure you it's not yet a sign of fatigue! :)
it's lack of interesting subjects.
but hey, i don't pay for film or disk space, so why not take another picture?
heading back to my hotel to drop my things off. as part of checking in, i got a free hpca jacket. oooooh.
yagns (yet another gratuitous "nature" shot). i successfully hid all the buildings in this one.
the car i rented. hope berkeley doesn't mind the additional fees compared to the basic vehicle they offered me. :)
distributed computing researcher and owner of a digital camera fancier than mine, pete wyckoff from sandia.
after the day's sessions had ended, philippe took us to one of his favorite restaurants in toulouse. note the highly varied selection of meals. (phil and philippe have the same thing too btw.) left to right: michael, bethany, trisha, phil, matt farrens, and philippe.
and here it is in detail.
the plates kept coming. the sauce was tasty but surely was death by any measure of health criteria.
our host for the evening. he sleeps 8-9 hours a day and does research on trace caches just in case you wanted to know that. :)
bethany's fancy dessert which michael skillfully matched up on the menu and with jeremy's lunch earlier at chez margot.
michael had some chocolate "thing".
and i had something which had a 'y' in it and which i secretly enjoyed being able to pronounce with reasonable confidence. :)
group shot outside of la grillotéque before heading off to the pubs.
thierry gave philippe directions apparently and so with that we were off to rendevous with him. on our way there, i got a nice shot of the place du capitole.
another shot of the capitole. some guy was talking to me in french while i was taking this. i think he was trying to tell me something about the main door, which i later learned had some significance, and which i even later unlearned and hence have nothing to say here.
this says "bar a vins". the reason it's so dark is because i only got one shot. the reason i only got one shot is because after taking this photo, i had to dive out of the way as some crazy french driver tried to plow over me at full speed. french drivers are insane!
this place looked like it might be pretty happening. bethany, philippe, and michael seem to think so.
inside, we drank under the eerie glow of blue illumination. it was neat.
more of that.
we drank french beers -- since we were in france.
bethany outpacing her man.
retreating back to our hotels in 5 degree weather.
time for more room service and french subtitled american movies.
