tokyo: sensory overload.

shinjuku akihabara ginza harajuku shibuya ebisu takashimaya

well, today was famous okonomiyaki place day.
so as yoda would say, "to ebisu you go".
here we go.
hm...
it worked, and here we are: ebisu, home of the famous chibo okonomiyaki restaurant!
after 30+ minutes or walking in the hot sun, here we are at the top of yebisu (where chibo is located). it turns out there is a direct walkway right out of the train station indoors that leads directly to this building! ugh!
chibo is located on the 38th floor, which features a smashing view of the city.
it was a cloudy day, but the restaurant still featured spectacular views.
the menu, surprisingly, even had english descriptions of the various okonomiyaki.
for most okonomiyaki served here, the protocol is that the ingredients are prepared and brought out to you, then you cook/eat it directly on this plate on your table.
large complex with red cars below = traffic school.
more ebisu buildings.
there's apparently a famous beer garden and other attractions around here, but after the meal ahead, it was nap time! :D
left page of the menu. you can get mochi as one of the ingredients! you can also "make your own" okonomiyaki by choosing an arbitrary combination of ingredients (lower left).
right page of the menu.
sake in the middle of the afternoon. :P
menu.
this is a "vegetarian" okonomiyaki which included asparagus, spinach, cheese, mochi, bacon, and a few other things.
chaki and his seafood okonomiyaki.
member of the chibo staff who explained the mysterious world of cooking your own okonomiyaki on your table. her english was vastly superior to my japanese. that cover of the awful phrasebook i was carrying around was completely embarrassing!!
after a bit of instruction, things got rolling. first: cooking the bottom layer.
then, for the vegetable okonomiyaki, butter on the surface first, then all the ingredients on top.
the seafood version seems to be coming along nicely.
and here is my vegetable creation. bacon goes on top!
at this point, you cook it 2-3 minutes on a side and flip it a few times for around 10-12 minutes.
mmmmm...
yakisoba (upper left) and another (prepared) okonomiyaki on the lower left.
more.
once cooked, you then apply the various condiments shown here.
leading to the finished product!
according to the girl shown above, eating these okonomiyaki "osaka-style" entails eating them with this square metal instrument and not chopsticks. ok!
the aftermath.
chibo sign.
down the elevator back to reality . . .
. . . and the heat . . .
. . . and the humidity . . .
aiiiiiiieee!! the "secret" direct passageway to/from the train station and chibo! definitely need to remember this next time. :P
