tokyo: sensory overload.

shinjuku akihabara ginza harajuku shibuya ebisu takashimaya

the most expensive land on earth in terms of price per square foot.
random intersection in ginza.
waiting for the signal.
bar snacks with my "sodoti dogu"! that's octopus there on chaki's fork! :D
ginza.
desserts on the street.
YEEEEP!! i think hacking one of these parking machines would present somewhat of a challenge. :P
at last: ohmatsuya! the food and atmosphere in this restaurant is absolutely incredible. highly recommended! :D
the setting at the table. this restaurant features an old farmhouse style atmosphere and apparently is partially modeled after a 17th century samurai house in northern japan. it specializes in foods of the rural yamagata prefecture.
as mentioned, be prepared to read some japanese when eating at anything besides your hotel or american chain restaurants!
also, if you're relying on people speaking fluent / any english at a restaurant like this, that is probably not a good idea.
luckily my "computer science" attire didn't stop me at the door.
and here, we have the best sake i had on the entire trip. i didn't realize it at the time, but some of the best sake in the country can be had at this place. :D
first course.
followed by some sashimi.
preparing the charcoal.
more.
i'm guessing this is probably the traditional equivalent of my weber 87886 chimney starter?
yum.
our waitress.
er, some type of tofu skewers?
mm... charred.
somehow the quality control involved in raising japanese cows gives me a little bit of comfort relative to the threat of mad cow disease.
crab with various herbs and a smidgen of uni! :D
outstanding. :D
preparing for soba.
grating fresh mountain herbs of various kinds.
more.
and now some fresh wasabi. that is chaki hard at work.
another shot of the wasabi. all this preparation was eventually for the soba dipping sauce.
soba.
no more soba.
sobayu.
which then goes into our previous sauce to make a broth.
finally, some ocha?
it's over. just 20,000 yen for two people!? unbelievable.
another member of the ohmatsuya staff.
heading back to the ginza train station amongst the various porsches, ferraris, etc.
