deep blue sea: the aquarium of the bay.

cruising our way through overpriced office space en route to the aquarium of the bay.
nicholas van orten: "it's a game. it's a game."
former dot-bomber lugging 600 pounds of drunk, fast food flesh down the embarcadero at the peak of the afternoon heat.
upon seeing my camera, one of them squealed: "we should get his address!". if they only knew what i was planning to do with these pictures. oh hee hee hee. :D
imitation, once again.
*yawn*
YEAH!!! the aquarium of the bay. prominent advertising and its location on the embarcadero lead many to think that this is merely a tourist trap. hardly the case!
like any respectable california aquarium, our excursion begins with a small school of anchovies. (for comparison, see the anchovies at the scripps institute for oceanography.)
the farallon islands, being just a short distance away, have a significant influence here. one of these days, perhaps we'll take a boat out there, drink some champagne, and take a dip with the great white sharks. oh, looks like someone has already thought of this! :D
feeding frenzzzzzy!!
i think a large number of americans have this shape by default.
don't recall what this fish is, but it bears a striking resemblance to something you'd see out of lake tanganyika.
a ray darting straight at me. the fish here are unusually friendly and active. it was unlike any other aquarium i'd ever seen.
a flat fish hovering over the sand. hooooover.
p.sherman, 42 wallaby way, sydney!
nemo wallowing around in an anemone.
sandy, dory, and nemo! :D

one moment, cruising the pristine water of the aquarium of the bay. the next, served up with orange-fennel salsa at cashion's eat place in washington d.c.
more fish overhead.
overexposure.
fish and starfish co-existing harmoniously in a flawless, man-made ecosystem.
take starfish, throw against wall. SPLAT, SPLAT, SPLAT!!
coral, fish, etc.
sandy overcoming her phobia of eels.
a ray showing the effects of having several thousands pounds of pressure and razor sharp teeth slicing through its succulent flesh.
the culprit.
a sturgeon who had recently escaped from the matrix. note the precision arrangement of red circular marks on its belly.
large sturgeon. also known as many kilograms of caviar. :D
cruising down the tunnel.
more.
sandy inspecting the underside of a methylmercury-infused shark.
sturgeon, again.
a series of large leopard sharks.
sandy has a fascination with sturgeons.
sandy and i in the tunnel.
another menacing looking shark preparing to devour a fellow aquarium mate.
sandy and a tank filled with a variety of rockfish species.
they're red.
did i mention they're red?
in case you missed that.
sandy and a fringehead.
the "petting area" and leopard sharks!
hand in pool: no problem. school of leopard sharks in the pacific ocean with me submerged in 4-5 feet deep water: problem.
starfish pool.
a vast assortment of starfish.
more starfish! this exhibit is incredible.
more of that.
sea slug. mmm . . .
random, uncategorized fish.
a little message.
these captions are fairly useless at this point.
me, examining the selection of the day's fresh fish. being very politically incorrect, i wolfed down a heap of sea bass and washed it down with a nice, buttery chardonnay. :D
