maui: an aspirin popping, waterfalled out christmas in 80 degree weather.

ku'au & lahaina ma'alaea naska & i'ao valley ke'anae hana pools of o'heo ulalena

on our way to the black sand beach.
we didn't add our names.
on the black sand beach.
more names.
first sign.
and the next. they should add the shark warning from the maui ocean center too!
enjoying the water.
away from the beach.
more ocean pounding on the rocks. wonder what this place will look like in 1000 years.
more views.
and yet another.
it wasn't as dark as this picture might suggest.
from the other side on the beach.
marci looking out into the distance.
this looks like the same shot. this is what happens when you don't have to pay for film.
and yet another. are we getting tired of this place yet?
more vegetation.
and water if you like.
and more.
yaw on our way to the pools of o'heo.
i guess i took more photos because this one was bigger than the others. i can't think of any other reason at the moment.
more.
and even more. are you getting waterfalled out yet?
more again.
the water eventually fed a stream that ran off for some distance.
oh my god, yet again.
and again.
and once again! this is getting really boring.
and now we begin our one mile hike to see the top of yet another waterfall. you've seen many of them already, but this one will definitely be worth seeing.
we walked on and on and on.
over branches, through mud, and ground littered with wild mangos.
more walking. my aspirin count was at about 10 at this point.
oh my god, and we haven't even begun the real trail!
and when we got there, i took this photo thinking that this was it.
but on the other side, there was am amazing view, a waterfall that extended hundreds of feet below, and a cliff whose edge you could sit at and reflect upon your existence (if you like).
marci showing some skin and taking a dip.
stretching out to catch a view of the water below.
the top of the waterfall.
another slightly blurry shot. i leaned way off the edge to take this. was it worth it?
the view right about at the point where someone should dive off of this cliff -- and survive.
water feeding into the waterfall.
from here, you could see all the way out to the ocean. this waterfall actually feeds a number of pools which eventually connect to the ocean.
try and imagine where i am sitting at this point. one strong breeze and it's all over, baby! well, for my camera at least.
and to add a little perspepctive. you won't see much more of me than this in any of my photos.
if things are darker than you would like, that's because i screwed things up with my camera. oh, if only randy were here.
another shot.
the water above.
this was my favorite spot of the entire trip, hence all the photos.
one more.
and another.
and yet another.
this looks like a picture i already took.
just the water.
some guy being daring.
contemplating his mortality.
random guy and marci on the edge.
another view.
i probably should've taken some of these out.
but i didn't. :)
bandwidth is plenty, but perhaps not over a modem. ah well.
my cowardly shot.
closer.
and even closer.
farther upstream, more pools.
and vegetation.
and more.
there was a large cave at the top that we dared not venture into.
same thing.
last shot.
same waterfall, this time from the other side. we were sitting right at the top.
these flowers in the foreground make this shot that much more interesting, don't you think?
but maybe not so interesting that you'd like to see it for a third time.
