maui: an aspirin popping, waterfalled out christmas in 80 degree weather.

ku'au & lahaina ma'alaea naska & i'ao valley ke'anae hana pools of o'heo ulalena

ok, this partitioning of photos into ke'anae, hana, and the pools of o'heao isn't quite right but it's approximate. it doesn't really matter.
shot from my house while waiting for marci to pick me up.
our first stop and first waterfall of the day. there are dozens of waterfalls like this and something like over 100 bridges on the road to hana.
another shot of the same.
marci hiding amongst the vegetation.
another shot of the same waterfall. you could probably go swimming here. the water looked deep enough.
looking towards the sky. the weather was wonderful this day. unfortunately, i had a fever and the beginnings of a cold, which i still have at this very moment. aspirins every two hours temporarily took care of that problem.
i'm obviously impressed by this.
marci pointing at something.
after climbing barefoot up a number of rocks, we eventually ended up here.
it's hard to tell from the picture but the water was actually moving. as it streamed over the rocks, it reminded me of something out of a kitaro song or something. very zen, indeed!
another cave.
a few of the rocks we had to climb to get here.
smaller cave.
marci relaxing on a rock. it's so quiet here all you here is the water against the rocks.
there were many caves.
some of the many rocks, none of which you should take from the island.
a woman making some cool baskets of some sort. i probably learned what these were called back in gradeschool but can't remember now.
arm fetishist matt massie would probably appreciate how toned her arms are.
yaw (yet another waterfall).
one could climb to the top if one were so inclined. there are two ways to do it.
i met another student from cal while i was here.
he was on vacation.
we encouraged him to head up to the top.
and so he did.
random water shot.
we stopped at a park to have something to eat. while there, we took some photos.
that stretch of land across the water is where we eventually want to be.
better shot of the same without the plant.
another shot of the ocean.
the ke'anae penisula.
those are taro beds below.
there was a great view from this lookout spot. a bunch of tourists from thailand followed us here.
more taro, more ocean.
another shot of the same.
better view of the taro.
i don't even like taro.
marci enjoying the view and wondering why i couldn't have done this trip when her roommates came to hawaii last year.
last shot of the ke'anae peninsula.
a spectacular waterfall in puaa kaa state wayside park.
three people we met who wanted a picture.
and so they got one. i should've given them my url.
portrait shot.
and another.
they don't look as cold as they really were.
en route to wainapanapa state park, a black sand beach.
getting there requires driving past many trees on a narrow road.
more of that.
getting to the beach (and the caves) requires seeing more branches than the blair witch project.
it gets pretty complicated.
luckily we're not very tall.
branches yes, clever internet marketing no.
more greeness.
on the trail to the wainapanapa caves.
and here we see the wainapanapa caves where "legend says princess popoalaea hid from her cruel husband but was discovered and killed. several times a year the waters turn red in her memory, or it could be the tiny red shrimp that live there."
it's so dark in here i can't see how anyone could even notice the water was red. it's a legend, ah well.
a shot of the black sand beach.
these are the types of photos i had intended to take.
tourists testing the tricky waters of wainapanapa out.
obstacles for swimming.
same thing.
and now with some surf.
this looks really fun, doesn't it?
black sand beach.
more rocks, more water. i can't really think of anything to put here.
some people swam out to the rocks then jumped off from the top (about a 30 foot drop).
more swimming, more ocean.
with water this clear and the sun out, who can resist?
lucky there weren't any tiger sharks out today.
last photo before uploading to my vaio (also in my backpack). how geeky is that?
