maui: an aspirin popping, waterfalled out christmas in 80 degree weather.

ku'au & lahaina ma'alaea naska & i'ao valley ke'anae hana pools of o'heo ulalena

shot of a park in naska. naska is an old world war ii naval base which has now turned into state housing. it's not the best place for pictures, but it is conveniently located just a few miles from kahului.
lots of windsurfing goes on here.
marci heading out to see (but not enter) the water.
note how she skillfully avoids getting wet. the water here isn't exactly the cleanest around.
more of the same.
the wind was low but there were still some people out.
the beach is littered with seaweed coming from who knows where. you could probably eat it, but i wouldn't recommend it. :)
the beach doesn't extend very far.
the water was mild though.
which can be good if you're just learning to windsurf.
you could probably swim here without consequence.
not exactly the softest sand in the world.
some guy who probably has no idea he's on my web page now.
marci again.
looks like a heart. i can't tell, i didn't dig it.
try it, you'll like it!
another random ocean shot. i was pretty desperate early on. things get better later.
trees that got in our way.
the ground was soft though.
after naska, we headed to iao valley, a two-minute drive from my old house in wailuku heights.
these mountains are fairly accessible.
there are nice walkways too.
if you want a tame introduction to nature, this would probably be it.
water from the iao stream(?). this looks like some generic nature jpeg you'd find on the web but this is actually maui.
i love water shots.
here's yet another.
and here we see the iao needle itself. back in the day, warriers used it as a lookout for enemies.
afternoon shot.
and yet another.
and another. you'll notice this repetition theme throughout this journey.
and in case you didn't know what it was.
scattered throughout the area are little signs which provide historical information.
another shot which i have no caption for. looks at the pictures, skip the captions.
marci ascending the stairs for a better view.
some history on iao needle.
another shot of the needle.
a spot where you can hang out and view the needle.
these don't bother us.
ooooh, running water over rocks. this isn't very impressive.
marci heading down a neat trail.
houses of different styles symbolize the major ethnic groups on the island. japanese.
with koi.
people i don't know taking pictures.
something related to immigrants coming here to work in the sugar cane fields.
chinese.
marci, who is not chinese.
heading over to another house.
filipino.
hawaiian.
taro, which is used to make poi, among other things.
more taro.
running out of light.
last shot before the good stuff.
