san diego: nuclear fission and girls with chicklets.

it took 90 mph on 880 and a run down this path for me to make it to the npaci all hands meeting.
posters in hand, phil buonadonna awaiting our flight to san diego. he knows a lot about nuclear fission. ask him about it sometime.
eric fraser was also there. he actually had some real responsibilities to attend to though.
after nearly a month of idle time, my digital camera is finally back in action! i'm sure these people were quite excited about that.
i wonder what this guy's head feels like when it rains.
or when cold air is blasting on it.
she looks awfully cheery distributing these peanuts.
as do some of the people consuming them.
a photo from 'how to eat peanuts for dummies'.
the peanuts knocked fraser out.
which was a good thing since our flight wasn't very exciting. and finally, we arrived in sunny san diego. it seemed a lot warmer than 64 degrees for some reason.
heading to pick up our car from the oh-so-sleazy fox rent-a-car. i'd do a search for their web site url, but i don't think that will be necessary.
the weather in san diego was far better than what it had been in the bay area.
our rental helped us get around to enjoy some of that.
once we got past these guys that is.
drive thru mexican food with cellular phones and pagers! what a combination!
where phil and i "stayed". i didn't even see our room until 5 or 6am the day we left.
once we'd checked in, we decided to start things off by heading to ocean beach, a short drive from the mansion phil once stayed at for a year.
a very san diego place to eat.
eric and phil examining the license plates on the wall.
which are unreadable in this picture.
this menu is actually rather complex compared with the minimalism of in-n-out.
the creativally named ocean beach.
another shot.
the surf was actually quite good that day. use the people on the walkway above for scale.
phil and eric doing a beach shot.
we then decided to amuse ourselves.
outfit and gun color coordinated.
air hockey, baby!
fraser wanted a shot at the title and so i gave him one. it was 3-1 at this point. the game ultimately ended with a score of 7-3 as i retained my air hockey championship title. :)
phil wanted to buy a new mountain bike.
and so we checked out the mountain bike warehouse.
but didn't get anything.
next on our journey, the scripps institute for oceanography and their wonderful aquarium.
outside.
i love aquariums and was delighted to find an interesting collection of specimans here with very little overlap from aquariums i've been to in the past.
eric trying to bridge the gap between live and canned. anchovies. they have neat little mouths that sort of resemble that of a basking shark or a sea bass.
fishes from the pacific northwest.
more of that area.
a fantastic jellyfish.
me in front of my future home aquarium.
and now without the flash.
phil would probably enjoy coming over to my house.
and allowing me to photograph him.
wish there was a nearby kitchen. check out the size of these fish!
a nurse shark according to phil.
an interesting collection of fishes which i didn't have enough time to read about.
a beautiful collection of coral in a colorful and well-lit aquarium.
another shot of that wonderful arrangement.
phil's friend was once stung by a lionfish. as he lived to tell the tale, apparently they're not that venomous. (although he did have to go to some toxic emergency thing or something like that.)
a view of the pacific ocean from outside the scripps institute of oceanography.
fraser enjoying that same view.
there was a tide pool outside with artificial currents.
the aquarium wasn't very crowded either inside or outside, so that was nice.
inside, there was a museum with various exhibits, each telling a tale that was somehow related to the ocean. this particular exhibit allowed you to scan bar codes on an item and discover what role the ocean plays in the making of that item.
lipstick apparently . . .
relies on oil and seaweed.
jumping many hours ahead past the npaci meeting and our brief journey to tijuana, we were back at our sleazy car rental joint again.
which is conveniently located next to a palm and tarot card reader.
they sell useless mexico insurance here.
which we didn't buy. phil conducted most of the negotiations.
in the meantime, i sat around and thought about chicklets. only m&m's here. damn.
